Law enforcement makes arrest in 15-year-old priest murder case
September 19, 2007A Lafourche Parish grand jury indicted Mathews mother, Amy Hebert, 40, on two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of her two young children.
Hebert allegedly stabbed her daughter, Camille, 9, and her son, Braxton, 7, to death inside their home.
When Hebert did not show up for work on Aug. 20, a coworker contacted a family member who went to her home with an off-duty deputy to see what was wrong.
Hebert’s vehicle was parked at the home and the doors were locked from the inside.
The deputy and the family member broke into the home through a back window.
Once inside, the deputy realized it was a crime scene and escorted the family member out.
Investigators found Hebert, conscious, under the covers in her bed with her two deceased children. She had self-inflicted knife wounds to her chest, abdomen, neck and wrist.
Several kitchen knives were found around the scene, which included Hebert’s bedroom and the bathroom.
The family dog had been slain, too.
The Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office later determined the children did in fact die from the knife wounds.
Lafourche District Attorney Cam Morvant declined to comment on Hebert’s indictment.
He reportedly gave only the charges and Hebert’s Sept. 21 arraignment date.
Hebert remains at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel. She is being held without bond.
