St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin Jr. is the 2011 President of the Police Jury Association of Louisiana.

Naquin said the term is for one year. He was elected during the conclusion of the 87th Annual Police Jury Association Convention, held in Shreveport from Feb 17-19.

“I have made history because this is also the first time anyone from St. Mary Parish has been elected,” he said. “At this critical time in our economic situation, it is vital that all public servants from the local to the federal level work hand-in-hand to assure a better future for those we serve.”

According to its website, https://www.lpgov.org, the Police Jury Association of Louisiana was created in 1924 to improve parish government in the Louisiana. Membership is open to each of the 64 parishes in the state, whether organized as a Police Jury, Parish Council or Parish Commission.

The Association is housed in its own building at 707 N. 7th Street in Baton Rouge, and has a full-time staff charged with the responsibility of keeping state and national public officials informed of the activities and needs of the parish governing authorities.

The staff gathers information that will benefit the membership and disseminates that information through periodic orientation and training seminars and conferences it conducts throughout the state.

The Association publishes newsletters, technical pamphlets, a directory of parish officials and the Police Jury Manual, as well as a quarterly magazine, Louisiana Parish Government.

The Association also operates the Parish Government Risk Management Agency, an inter-local risk management agency that provides Workers’ Compensation and Health and Hospitalization coverage programs for parish governments and affiliated entities.
