October 13, 2011When redistricting eliminated Terrebonne Parish Councilman Kevin Voisin from seeking re-election to the District 6 seat he holds, it opened a door of opportunity for two political newcomers to face off against one another without having to meet an incumbent.
With no party affiliation, Mike Holcomb entered the race with a desire to expand the nature of his experience in public service. A lieutenant with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office, Holcomb said he intends to leave that position if elected so as to satisfy state law. He said he has employment opportunities arranged in the private sector, but declined to elaborate on them at this time. In the past Holcomb has also worked in auto sales, insurance and finance businesses.
As the Republican contender, Russell “Red” Hornsby is a safety manager and experienced in offshore oil production and marine activity.
Holcomb identifies himself as being “proactive rather than reactive” and said his experience in law enforcement has equipped him with the skills necessary to listen and understand the concerns of people from various backgrounds and situations. “My career in public service and ability to work with others to get the job done sets me apart,” he said.
Hornsby said that as an executive in the petroleum industry, riverboat captain and licensed marine surveyor, he understands the needs of business, and posses management experience necessary to serve the interests of constituents.
Both candidates said that drainage is a given concern in their district. Beyond that issue, Hornsby said traffic congestion on La. Highway 311 has his attention. “I want to get Valhi Boulevard extended to Savanne Road and to the [U.S. Highway 90] corridor,” he said.
Holcomb said he shares the traffic concern, and as for drainage he said, “I’ve already been working with some engineers and the parish drainage department and looking at how it can be fixed.”
