Details emerge as Chabert privatization draws near
May 14, 2013It’s sometimes funny to see the amount of things college students can stuff into their rooms in a campus residence hall, and not all of those items usually make it back to a parent’s house for the summer break.
“When I was in school, I got rid of a lot of things when I moved out of the residence hall,” said Sarah Sonefeld, coordinator for contracts and assignments for the Office of Housing and Residence Life at Nicholls State University. “There are better things to do with those items than just throw them away.”
As the spring semester comes to a close, Nicholls’ 1,100 residents are being asked to donate unwanted dorm wares including clothing, lamps, microwaves, refrigerators and unopened, non-perishable food, all of which will be donated to the Salvation Army and local food banks. Students have through today to drop off items at collection centers at the main housing office in The John A. Brady Residential Complex and the lobby area of Ellender Hall.
The program, part of the Green initiatives of the Student Life Division of Nicholls, is headed up by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
“We see this as a way for our students to help people in the local community,” Sonefeld said. “We brain stormed with others in the office and came up with this idea. I have already heard from several students who will be donating items.”
“This is our first year to host this event,” said Mark Osborne, marketing and communications specialist for Auxiliary Services. The project is part of the campus’s green initiative.
“When students start moving out of the residence halls, they tend to throw a lot of things away,” he said. “(The Housing and Residence Life office) wanted to help the community rather than throw out lots of things they knew other people could use. We hope to get lots of things and give back to the community.”
Alicia Boudreaux, a freshman at Nicholls State University, drops off a box of ramen noodles at the John A. Brady Residential Complex. Students are asked to donate unwanted dorm wares including clothing, lamps, microwaves, refrigerators and unopened, non-perishable food, and these items will in turn be donated to the Salvation Army and local food banks.
