October 7, 2010The city of Patterson will soon have a new mayor.
Democrat Rodney A. Grogan unseated the incumbent, Democrat Mike Accardo during this weekend’s elections, carrying 54 percent of the 1,586 ballots cast.
Accardo is in the process of wrapping up his first term as the city’s mayor. He said his primary platform for re-election was to, “remain fiscally responsible in the tough economic times and address the issues of a new water plant and drainage problems on Mike and Leo Drive.”
Grogan’s platform was a total 180, and he wants to push the city to outsiders using the Internet Technology program.
Grogan’s victory marked a busy weekend for St. Mary voters, but not necessarily for change – especially in the parish’s school board.
In the only two school board seats on the ballot, the incumbent candidate won fairly easy decisions.
In District 4, incumbent democrat Murphy J. Pontiff retained his position by winning 59 percent of the vote over his challenger, fellow democrat Anthony Delasbour.
In District 10, incumbent Anthony Streva defeated challenger Howard Castay by a 76 percent to 24 percent margin.
Patterson and Berwick will also have newly-elected council members thanks to this weekend’s elections.
But like with the school board, the faces will be pretty much the same.
In Patterson, incumbents L.L. “Larry” Mendoza, Joe Russo III and Claire Saywer will remain in office. Joining them will be Sandra Turner and John Rentrop, who also emerged victorious in the seven-candidate election.
In Berwick, incumbents Duval Arthur, Troy Lombardo, Damon Robison, Penny Crappell and Edgar Thomas will all remain in office after beating out Randal Monceaux in a six-candidate campaign.
