My name is Roy Chauvin. I am a candidate for Terrebonne Parish President. I am 73 years young, in good physical health. My life has been filled with adventure, never a dull moment. I am married to Sally Benoit Chauvin, my literal childhood sweetheart. At 4 years old, while living across the street from one another on Morrison Avenue, she told my mother she would marry me someday. The power of her mission and my submission led to our marriage on August 8, 1970. Not able to have children we adopted five children, have custody of a grandchild, and we currently have in our lives, since he was 12 years old, a 38 year old autistic foster child.
Attending Catholic schools all my life, I graduated from Vandebilt Catholic High School where I was an All-State baseball player. This endeavor led to an athletic scholarship to Nicholls State University from which I graduated with the highest honors obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Pre-Law. I attended Loyola Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana. I resigned from law school when I learned from the Dean of Law that I was allowing my morals to interfere with the study of law.
On June 10, 1974, I began a career as a “Game Warden.” My first encounter with politics came when I had to have the endorsement of the State Representative or there was no job regardless of my credentials. I did not realize how corrupt and political the system would be. My job turned into a vocation in my fight against the injustices aimed at the poor, who had no political connections. This Representative told me after a raid in his area by me and a group of Federal Agents that I could catch anybody in his area on the condition that I leave him alone. Was this fair and honest…NO. My mission was to root out and expose corruption. For 27 years I suffered along the lonely path of being fair and honest. My faith in God, at times, made me feel invincible. The media portrayed me as a “David” going against a “Goliath.” My mission for fairness and honesty spread throughout the State and Country as I was spotlighted in a one hour telecast on National Geographic in 1990, outlining my philosophy. On the heels of that telecast a Japanese Film crew followed me for 10 days as I shared my experiences with 30 million people in Osaka, Japan. State newspapers embellished my career on the front pages, with the New Orleans Times Picayune and the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate taking the lead. The public seemed to love my fight for the underdog. My 27 year career is laid out in my book published 2 years ago.
My second career was Foster Care. During our 40 year scamper through the torment of caring for children, who were cast out of society, we managed to build a family. We were long term care Foster Parents as we passed through our home 24 children: 13 boys and 11 girls. Adoptions came along the way. Four of our adopted children are card-carrying Houma Indians. Throughout our many years we had 8 children in our home even though the law limited the placements to 6. This entire venture is outlined in my second book published this year.
This brings me to the present day and my mission to become Parish President. The older one gets the wiser he becomes. His body may change but his mind is still filled with dreams of a better world. I decided to run for Parish President because my aspirations and drive are as intense as they were when I was 24 years old. To make campaign promises that one cannot bring to life is unfortunate and misleading. Today the public is wiser, but there is a distaste for elected officials and political candidates. There is a general lack of trust in elected officials and political candidates. Their names become synonymous with corruption. True or not, this is an attitude I want to change. One definition of “Politics” is defined as “improving someone”s status or increasing power within an organization.” This definition wreaks of an inflammatory philosophy that exemplifies an egotistical, condescending attitude that leaves humanity in ashes.
The word “Justice” is to treat everyone fairly and honestly. Similarly sounding, the phrase “Just-Us” refers to current day politicians who seem to disappear after being elected, only available to their close-knit inner circle who are cashing in on their war chest donations. Unlike other candidates, I have no second job. As Parish President I will give a 110 percent effort to improving Terrebonne Parish. I will not accept donations to my campaign, therefore, I will not have a war chest full of money that has strings of obligations tied to it. I will not participate in the atrocities of vote buying as I have heard exists from testimonies of seasoned politicians and campaign workers. I will not make promises I cannot keep because it sounds good. I will not be politically correct by beating around the bush on sensitive issues. My sole goal is to improve Terrebonne Parish in any way I can. I will run for only one term. I will dedicate 20 percent of the President’s salary to charities within the parish. I will push for improving the services of the elderly, those with disabilities, the underprivileged, and children. I will prioritize public safety be it through law enforcement or such things as hurricane protection levees. I will strive for fairness, honesty, and justice as it pertains to ALL citizens.
A VOTE FOR ME IS A VOTE FOR YOU.
In conclusion, My platform is simple “TO GIVE A VOICE TO THOSE WHO FEEL THEY HAVE NONE”
Thank you and pray for our success
I remain,
Roy Chauvin
