Head Start begins Aug. 25 in St. Mary Parish for children ages 3 to 5.

The free program, which originated under former President Dwight D Eisenhower’s administration, offers youngsters educational activities as well as physical and mental health services, two hot meals and a snack, said program Executive Officer Almetra J. Franklin.

The first day of school begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 2:15 p.m. The uniform is navy blue and white.

Parent orientation will be held Monday, Aug. 18, at 5 p.m. at the Bayou Vista Civic Center. A second session will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m., at the Broussard Harris Recreation Center in Franklin.

“Parent Orientation is mandatory and is held in order to acquaint parents or care givers with the rules and regulations governing the Head Start program,” Franklin said. “We are asking that both parents and grandparents attend the orientation.”
