Local nonprofit announces event to raise funds for Special Needs Shine Bright Scholarship Program

Terrebonne General | Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Live Well Bayou, a community early detection education and screening event, made a successful return to Houma over the weekend.
Held on Saturday, November 2, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Terrebonne General Health System campus, and made possible by the generous support of Cenac Marine Services, the community event saw residents take advantage of four different types of cancer screenings, including breast, prostate, colorectal and skin cancer. One participants were screened and a total of 257 total screenings were carried out. Forty four percent of those screened were uninsured, while 31 percent had never been screened before. The Mobile Care Clinic provided 28 biometric wellness screenings.
“The large number of people who were screened, in addition to the high percentage who were uninsured, shows just how important the event is for people in the Houma area,” said Hope Jeff, Bayou regional manager, early detection, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “These routine and critical screenings can, and do, save lives.”
Early detection makes a huge difference in people’s health. Live Well events aim to reach underserved people in the community who, typically, may not be able to easily access important health services.
“Live Well events aim to reach people regardless of their insurance or financial status,” said Layne Bordelon, development coordinator, Terrebonne General | Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Houma. “We’d like to once again thank Cenac, which has been a steadfast supporter of Terrebonne General | Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center for six years running. Their ongoing support has allowed us to continue bringing this crucial service to our community.”
Mary Bird Perkins and Terrebonne General formed a partnership in 2008 with one goal in mind: to offer communities in the Bayou Region a comprehensive cancer center, close to home. Since then, the Cancer Center has served thousands of residents.
