October 24, 2007Three Terrebonne Parish Council incumbents were returned to office in last Saturday’s election.
However, two council incumbents in runoff elections received fewer votes than their challengers.
A third incumbent, District 8 Councilman Peter Rhodes, led his three challengers, but all the candidates in the race received vote percentages within eight percentage points of the others.
District 1 Councilman Alvin Tillman and District 7 Councilman Clayton Voisin won re-election easily. Voisin took in more than twice the votes of closest competitor Nathan Trosclair, and Tillman nearly doubled the votes of lone challenger Clark Nixon.
District 2 Councilmember Arlanda Williams had a slightly tougher time fending off her sole opponent Aurestile Scott, garnering 59 percent of the vote.
Rhodes will face Terrebonne Port Commission Vice President Joey Cehan in the runoff. The incumbent received 30 percent of the vote to Cehan’s 26 percent.
Carl Chauvin and Dirk Guidry tallied 22 percent of the vote each.
District 4 incumbent Teri Cavalier and District 9 incumbent Pete Lambert will have to work to return to office.
Danny Henry, who previously held the District 9 seat for two terms, led Lambert by eight percentage points with 46 percent. Chris Chaisson pulled in 15 percent.
Cavalier trailed Clayton Voisin Jr. by 69 votes. Voisin garnered 48 percent of the vote to Cavalier’s 45 percent.
Leland Robichaux, a local businessman and Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Council board member, will represent the District 6 seat left vacant by Councilman Harold Lapeyre. Robichaux beat his only challenger, Donnie Cockerham, easily, gaining 73 percent of the vote.
Two other open seats will go to runoff elections.
In District 3, Billy Hebert, board vice chairman of the Terrebonne Parish Waterworks District, received 39 percent of the vote. He will meet retired oilfield products salesman Floyd Bergeron, who garnered 24 percent of the vote, in the runoff. Greg Hood and Charles “Speedy” Collins rolled up the remainder of the ballots.
In District 5, former Terrebonne Parish School Board President John Pizzolatto will face Otis Logue, ex-parish chief administrator and former South Central Industrial Association president. Pizzolatto got 47 percent of the vote to Logue’s 34 percent.
