Terrebonne Parish Special Olympics athletes recently traveled to the University of New Orleans for the Special Olympics Louisiana State Swim Meet, competing against 132 other swimmers and bringing home 32 medals– 29 of which were gold!

The Terrebonne Gators dominated the pool in all their designated divisions, with a final count of 29 Gold, 3 Silver, and 4 Bronze Medals. This year also served as a qualifying year for all Gold Medal winners throughout the State to be eligible for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“It’s been a fantastic year for Terrebonne Special Olympics, and I’m very proud of our athletes, coaches, and unified partners– they all put in a great effort with a lot of team work during practices to compete in these state events,” said Majella Breaux, LTP Coordinator. “Our Parish has not had this many Gold Medals in swimming in 7 years, so I’m very happy we are progressing in this sport.”

Head Coach Shaylee Pellegrin continued, stating, “I’m so extremely proud of the athletes from our meet this past weekend. The amount of hard work and dedication that they put into pool never fails to amaze me. It’s truly an experience like no other.”

Finally, Coach Angelique Nicholas added, “Our swim team each had their own challenge to conquer this season, and that they did. From swimming the length of the pool, anxiety about their first swimming competition, or taking on more laps than they did last year, they all trained hard and proved, not only they could do it, but they could do it in competition with their peers. Never underestimate a person with a disability!”
