The Thibodaux Police Department will host a crime symposium – the agency’s first of its kind – March 18 to hear the public’s concerns.

Representatives from the police department, the Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office and the criminal court system will be present to discuss crime issues in the city.

“It’s actually to inform residents in the area about the steps the police department has taken to deter crime and to let them know what crimes are being committed in their area,” said department spokeswoman Detective Sgt. Laura Guise.

Following a crime spike in February, the agency held a series of community meetings with Police Chief Craig Melancon and his commanding staff and the public. “The turnout was great. The people had a lot to tell us,” said Guise.

More than 100 people attended the previous events. Guise expects the same for the March 18 meeting.

“We want to show (the public) problem areas, and have them tell us about some of the things that we may have missed,” she said.

Residents can meet with Melancon at the Thibodaux Police Department, 1309 Canal Blvd., on Tuesday, March 18, from 6 to 7 p.m.

At the meeting, residents will learn how to file a violence or disturbance complaint and how to set up a neighborhood watch program. Officers will also provide neighborhood crime statistics.
