March 14, 2007A Thibodaux teen was critically injured Sunday morning when two 4-wheeler ATVs collided on La. 400 in Assumption Parish.
State Police Trooper First Class Rodney Hyatt said Roy Cancienne, 18, of Thibodaux was driving a 2003 Honda ATV, which is an unlicensed vehicle, east on La. 400 near La. 1011 at approximately 12:30 a.m. when the accident occurred.
State police reported that Cancienne slowed to make a right turn onto La. 1011 when he was struck from behind by Dustin Cavalier, 20, of Thibodaux, who was driving a 2006 Honda ATV.
Hyatt said Cancienne and Cavalier, along with one passenger each, had left the Schriever/Thibodaux area earlier in the night and traveled to Lake Verret, which is approximately 25 miles away.
The spokesman said they were on their way back to Thibodaux when the crash occurred.
Cancienne and his passenger, Danielle Cavalier, 17, of Thibodaux, as well as Cavalier and his passenger, Kimberly Robichaux, 17, of Thibodaux, were ejected from the ATVs, according to state police. Neither of the passengers were a wearing safety helmet.
Danielle Cavalier, Dustin Cavalier’s sister, was critically injured and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance, along with Cancienne, who sustained moderate injuries.
Dustin Cavalier and Robichaux were transported in a personal vehicle to the hospital. Both had moderate injuries, according to state police.
Hyatt said alcohol use is suspected to be a factor in the crash on the part of the both drivers. Blood was drawn from Cancienne and Cavalier, and was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge for analysis.
Trooper Johnny Adams is investigating the collision, and charges are pending.
Hyatt said the drivers could be cited for operating an off-road vehicle on a public road and operating a vehicle without a helmet. Cavalier could also be charged with careless operation.
