From the Houma Fire Department – At approximately 12:00 PM today, the Houma Fire Department received a call for a person in distress. Crews responded to the area of Pel’s Motel on Lafayette Street for a person at risk of falling out of tree.

Upon arrival fire officials found a female subject stuck in a tree unable to climb down with branches actively bending and breaking from their body weight. The crews were able to reach the subject and safely get them to the ground without injury with the help of an aerial ladder truck.

Upon investigation, crews discovered the individual was attempting to rescue a cat that had climbed into the tree the previous day. Fire officials were notified of the cat yesterday, but felt it prudent to let the cat climb down the tree on its own, without fire department interference.

Once this individual climbed the tree the cat did climb down the tree but then climbed up into a different tree on the property. It was then, the subject discovered they were unable to safely climb down from approximately 30 feet in the air and needed rescue.

“We want to remind the public that cats climb trees on a daily basis and it is a normal occurrence. They have claws specifically for climbing, as they may be hunting for food, fleeing a predator, or simply being inquisitive,” reads a statement from the Houma Fire Department. “The cat will climb down in time, it is not the safest option for you or firefighters to climb or ladder a tree to get the feline!”

The safest bet for everyone is to place some food at the base of the tree, remove any predators that may have caused them to seek shelter up the tree and allow the cat to climb down on its own.
