Councilman’s letter sparks strong responses
April 24, 2016Various wooden boats locally constructed or restored will ferry passengers on and around the Company Canal where it meets Bayou Lafourche Saturday, at a day-long festival to celebrate the Center for Traditional Louisiana Boat Building in Lockport.
The center’s director, Tom Butler, said admission is free. Boiled crawfish and other food will be sold to help pay for the center’s operation. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Butler said.
In addition to traditional boats built or restored at the center, visitors will be able to board a WWII troop carrier that will be brought to the Lockport boat launch by volunteers from the Houma Regional Military Museum.
The center, an extension of Nicholls State University, is housed in an old Ford dealership at 202 Main St. in Lockport. A display of classic automobiles is also expected.
Participants in the boat program recently completed restoration of a traditional 17-foot Lafitte skiff, which will also be on display.
“We got it from a guy in Barataria and it is a beautiful boat,” Butler said. “We are always building new boats, people contract with us and we have an ongoing display.”
The center does research regarding wooden boat building throughout South Louisiana. At present, all materials such as photographs, slides, oral history tapes and artifacts are housed in the library on the Nicholls campus.
