June 18, 2008The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is offering its second of three programs designed to teach children how to resist aggression defensively (RAD) beginning next week.
Set for Monday, June 23, through Friday, June 27, the course will be taught to youngsters ages 5 to 7 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for children ages 8 to 12. Both classes will be held at the LPSO Shooting Range on Louisiana Highway 182, west of Raceland.
Deputies certified in RAD training will teach self-defense and what children should do when faced with a possible dangerous situation. Spokesman Larry Weidel said it is an educational opportunity for children to learn personal safety strategies. On the final day of the class, youngsters will “fight off” an aggressor.
“It’s a lot of fun and the kids really get into it,” Weidel said.
Parents may drop off children or stay for the 90-minute program.
Participants should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe tennis shoes.
The cost for the program is $10 per child, which includes materials. Space is limited. The deadline to register is Friday, June 20.
