Joseph D. Hemstreet, 72, M.A. Psychological Counseling, Licensed Professional Counselor, BCSAC, BCCGC, a native of New Orleans, La., and a resident of Houma, La., died Sunday, December 14.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne T. Hemstreet; his children, Michael C. Hemstreet of Arlington, Va., David T. Hemstreet of Houma, Gretchen H. Bailey of Lafayette, La., William M. Hemstreet of Dallas, Tx., Bridget M. Hemstreet of New Orleans, Douglas J. Hemstreet of Houma and Patrick K. Hemstreet of Houston, Tx.; his brothers, James Hemstreet of Covington, La., Jeffrey Hemstreet of Dallas, and Harold Hemstreet of Dallas; and his grandchildren, Ethan and Elliot Hemstreet, Miles and Hope Hemstreet, Will and George Bailey, Christopher, Nicholas and Madeline Hemstreet and Grant Hemstreet.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Hemstreet; one sister, Margaret McManus; and his parents, Harold and Margaret Hart Hemstreet.

He served in the U.S. Air National Guard and was a parishioner of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. He was a retired licensed professional addiction counselor from Bayou Oaks Life Center in Houma. After his retirement he became the director of Terrebonne Parish’s Detox Center, then went on to St. Ann General Hospital’s Behavior Center in Raceland, La. He then practiced private professional counseling.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, December 19, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Houma. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with burial at 2 p.m. Friday at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery.

Chauvin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
