Joseph Norbert Himel, 83, a native of Chackbay, La., and a resident of Thibodaux, La., died at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, December 9.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Ethel Barrilleaux Himel; two daughters, Vicki Himel Hebert and husband Emile Jr., and Kathi Himel Melancon; four grandchildren, Joey Nicole Hebert, Brent Joseph Melancon, Jeri Hebert Austin and husband Jeremy and Jennifer Melancon Naquin and husband Clint; one great-grandchild, Chaz Thomas Daigle; and two sisters, Beatrice H. Easley and Doris H. Aucoin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma Clement Himel and Walter Himel; four sisters, Elva H. Chiasson, Anna Moe H. Raziano, Delores H. Porrier and Gertrude H. Owens; two brothers, Edward Himel and Norman Himel; and one son-in-law, Harold “Moon” Melancon.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Breton during World War II and was a member of the Thibodaux Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a member of West Thibodaux Fire Company.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Disabled American Veterans or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, December 12, at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux with mass to follow. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Thibodaux Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
