Joseph Poindexter Sr., 96, a native of Terrebonne Parish, La., and a resident of Raceland, La., died Tuesday, Aug. 25.
He is survived by his wife, Dwanna Poindexter of Raceland; five daughters, Mary Poindexter, Brenda Joseph, Alice Washington, Sharon Davis and Emelda Bankston, all of Raceland; one stepdaughter, Tamara Wilson of Atlanta, Ga.; five sons, Joseph Poindexter Jr. of Gibson, La., and Isiah Poindexter, Curtis Poindexter, Sterling Poindexter and Ronald Poindexter of Raceland; one brother, Evest Poindexter; one sister, Hazel Ruffins of Dallas, Texas; 58 grandchildren; 152 great-grandchildren; and 89 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lula Mae Poindexter; parents, Stel Poindexter and Alice Nixon; two daughters Gloria Johnson and Ruth Thompson; two brothers, Willie Poindexter and Clarence Poindexter; and three sisters, Nellie Poindexter, Lizzie Poindexter and Louise Poindexter Thompson
He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Raceland. A religious service will be at 11 a.m. at the church with burial at Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery in Raceland.
Kennedy Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of the arrangements.
