Dr. Margaret Virginia Jolley, 93, a native of Morgan City, La., and resident of Thibodaux, La., died Sunday, May 11, 2014.

Dr. Jolley became Nicholls State University’s first woman academic dean in 1974 and was dean of the Nicholls College of Life Sciences and Technology at the time of her retirement in 1977. In addition to home economics, the department she established in 1961, the college consisted of the departments of agriculture, biological sciences, engineering technology and nursing and allied health technology.

She helped plan the university’s cafeteria building and established several two- and four-year degrees as well as Nicholls’ daycare and pre-school laboratory programs.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Elizabeth Delahaye, Hannah Comerford, Barbara Joy and Dr. Homer Jolley.

Visitation will be 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, at St. Thomas Aquinas on the Nicholls campus with services to follow. Burial will be at Morgan City Cemetery. (Landry’s)
