
Two suspects in triple homicide released

Sidney P. “Check” Matherne, 76, a native and resident of Gheens, La., died Thursday, May 15, at 3:20 a.m.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Belle “Baby” Zeringue Matherne; son, John P. Matherne; daughters, Lucia M. Champagne and husband Clyde, Gwen M. Hitt and husband Craig, Lisa M. Falgout and husband Michael and Pamela M. Rodrigue and husband Ricky; grandchildren, Eric Champagne, Ashley Pitre, Claire Ourso, Wesley Hitt, Rachelle Bilbo, Trisha Falgout, Joshua Falgout and Regan Rodrigue; and great-grandchildren, Brennan Falgout, Jake Murphy Champagne, Makenzie Pitre and Sophia Ourso.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix Matherne Sr. and Adele Hebert Matherne; son, Sidney P. Matherne Jr.; brothers, Felix Matherne Jr., Antoinne Matherne and Johnny P. Matherne; sisters, Adele LeBouef, Adelina Perez, Adelhia Plaisance, Mathilde Daigle, Evelyn Theriot and Adelise LeBouef.
He died after a seven month battle with a chronic ear infection, surrounded by his devoted wife, his five children, his sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed riding his tractor, gardening, bingo and cruising throughout the community in his new car. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gheens with a mass of Christian burial to follow. He will be buried at Holy Savior Cemetery in Lockport, La.
Falgout Funeral Home of Raceland, La., is in charge of the arrangements.
