Wilbert “Doodie” Bernard, 86, a native and resident of Thibodaux, La., died Sunday, March 1, at 1:33 p.m.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marie Kerne Bernard; son, Wilbert “Johnny” Bernard Jr. and wife Charlene Legendre Yates Bernard; sister, Mrs. Abel “Dot” Caillouet; brother, Yockie Bernard and wife Beth; and step-grandson, Shawn Yates.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elda Clement and Raoul Bernard; sisters, Mrs. Verna Clause, Mrs. E.J. “Mim” Clause, Mrs. Lucy Brown and Ida Bernard; and brother, Major Junior Bernard.
He was owner of Rox’s Bar and was the City Marshal from 1955-1990 until his retirement in December 1990. He was a member of the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department and Protector Fire Co. No. 2 for more than 60 years. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the American Legion, Woodmen of the World and VFW. He was a parishioner of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the St. Joseph Abbey, 75376 River St., Benedict, La., 70457.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Thibodaux with mass to follow. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Thibodaux Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
