Just four weeks remain before the Third-Annual Houma Heart and Soles Half-Marathon and 5K at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.

To help participants prepare for the big day, Terrebonne General Medical Center and the Cardiovascular Institute of the South would like to offer training tips to the community.

TGMC will write a weekly column series each Wednesday leading up to the race.

In this week’s entry, the hospital lists another training schedule and also gives the benefits of running to people’s health.

Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) and the Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) want to help you with your training leading up to the big day.

Running can help prevent disease; a great reason to start training for a half-marathon. Amazingly, for women, running can help lower your risk of breast cancer. It can also help reduce the risk of stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and even reduce the risk of heart attacks.

The key to success in running is motivation. It is easy to be motivated when you first start training and the excitement is fresh. But it is essential to stay positive and maintain that motivation daily throughout your training, even when it starts to get tough. Try setting attainable goals for yourself and see how quickly you can meet them.

To help keep your motivation and excitement going on race day, dress as your favorite celebrity and join this year’s Heart & Soles Half-Marathon theme to “Rock the Red Carpet Finish.”

The training schedule below shows the recommended workouts for each day this week. Ideally, you should start out with some running experience before beginning to train for a half-marathon. Always consult your doctor before making a drastic change to your exercise plan.

Here is your four weeks to go schedule

Monday – 45 minutes of stretching and strength training

Tuesday – 5 mile run easy; focus on breathing and posture

Wednesday – 3 mile run or cross training (swimming, bike, elliptical)

Thursday – 5 mile run easy, 20 minutes stretch and strength training

Friday – Rest or 30 minutes easy run

Saturday – Rest

Sunday – 10K race. If there isn’t an organized race in your town, run 6.2 miles on your own, but push your limits.

The 3rd Annual Houma Heart and Soles Half-Marathon and 5K will take place on Saturday, December 1 at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.
