The Nicholls State athletic department announced both the women’s and men’s basketball schedule for the 2011-12 season last Wednesday.

The women’s schedule is headlined by several major conference opponents, most notably a Thanksgiving week trip to the West Coast where the team will take part in the University of Oregon’s tournament.

“By design, our staff and I were very competitive in non-conference scheduling,” Colonels fourth-year coach DoBee Plaisance said. “Most of our opponents are from bigger conference such as the SEC, PAC-12 and the Sun Belt.”

Headlining the men’s always-brutal non-conference slate are December matchups with Texas and North Carolina, both of whom are preseason favorites to compete for the national championship.

“I think the schedule we have this year will not only challenge us and prepare us for play in the Southland, but continue to help our program grow in terms of knowing what it takes to compete consistently against quality opponents,” Nicholls State men’s basketball coach J.P. Piper said.

Both teams will open their schedules on Nov. 3

The men’s team will host the University of Mobile for a scrimmage, while the women’s team will travel to Mississippi for a scrimmage with Southern Miss.

The men’s team will be featured on national television on Feb. 18 when they take part in an ESPN Bracketbuster game, a game that is guaranteed to be hosted on the family of networks.
