January 10, 2007Freshman guard Barbara Febus nailed a three-point basket with 51 seconds to play in overtime to give the Nicholls Lady Colonels an 82-78 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
The Lady Colonels had four players finish in double figures. Jamie Octave’s 21 points led all scorers. Claire Barry finished with 16 points and Febus chipped in 10 points to go along with seven rebounds. Not to be outdone was Nicholls junior guard Katherine Plummer, who ended the game with 13 points, 16 assists, six steals and five rebounds. Plummer’s 16 assists tied the school record for most assists in a game, which was set by Cynthia Newman on January 30, 1993 in a game against Sam Houston State.
Kendall Homesley led Sam Houston with 15 points including five three-point baskets. Lydia Gonzales and Adah Wells added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Sam Houston shot 48 percent from the field to Nicholls’ 47 percent. Both teams shot 55 percent from the free throw line. The Bearkats out rebounded the Lady Colonels, 49-33. Nicholls scored 25 points off 28 Bearkat turnovers while committing only 14 turnovers themselves.
The Lady Colonels (3-10, 1-1 SLC) led 32-22, with five minutes to play in the first half and entered the locker room with a 39-33 advantage.
The Bearkats started the second half with an 8-0 run to take the lead 41-39 on an Adah Wells jumper three minutes into the period. The lead changed hands four times in the second half. Sam Houston State (3-12, SLC 0-2) held an eight-point lead, 69-61, with 8:58 to play and was up by five points, 73-68, with 3:09 to play. However, the Lady Colonels held the Bearkats scoreless during the final three minutes of regulation. A Funaki Kefu layup tied the contest 73-73 with 1:44 to play. Neither team would score again, sending the game into overtime.
The Lady Colonels never trailed in the extra period, scoring five of the first six points to take a 78-74 lead before Sam Houston rallied to tie the contest, 78-78, with 1:10 to play. After Febus’ three-pointer, which gave Nicholls the lead, the Bearkats could not answer back and were forced to foul down the stretch.
Nicholls will continue Southland Conference play on the road, as the Lady Colonels travel to Arlington, Texas to play Texas-Arlington, Thursday at 7 p.m.
