April 9, 2008New Orleans high school track teams felt at home on the bayou as Brother Martin demolished the boys competition and the girls of John Ehret eased to victory at the Tiger Relays at Thibodaux High School last Friday.
Brother Martin’s boy’s team complied 100 points to finish first. Hahnville came in second with 58, and Jesuit placed third with 55.
John Ehret’s girls’ team earned 97 points to take first prize. Hahnville finished second with 77, and Baton Rouge Magnet placed third with 75.
Three Tiger Relays records were broken during the rainy meet.
Brother Martin’s Kenneth Schiffman, who was named Most Valuable Boys Performer, won the 1,600-meter run in 4:26:41.
Jesuit’s Ben Duhe won the triple jump with a leap of 49 feet, 9.75 inches, besting the old mark of 48 feet, 11 inches. Baton Rouge Magnet’s girls’ 1,600-meter relay team took half a second off the old record with a run of 4:01:83.
Hahnville’s Bryce Deruise was awarded Outstanding Track Performer for winning the 300-meter hurdles and placing second in the 110-meter hurdles.
South Lafourche’s Tyler Guidry was named Outstanding Field Performer for winning the shot put (54 feet) and placing second in the discus.
John Ehret’s Troylynn Tigler was awarded Most Valuable Girls Performer for winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Jonquil Griffin, also from John Ehret, was named Outstanding Girls Field Performer for wins in the high jump and triple jump.
Terrebonne’s Skyla Jackson was named Outstanding Girls Track Performer, winning the 3,200-meter run (12:30:58) and finishing second in the 1,600-meter run.
Terrebonne had two other winners: Mark Lawson in the boy’s 100-meter dash (10:62) and long jump (21 feet, 11.5 inches), and Cierra Bonvillian in the girl’s 800-meter run (2:31:33).
H.L. Bourgeois had two winners: Caleb Williams in the boy’s 200-meter dash (22:47), and Chelsea Steele in the girl’s javelin (112 feet, 6 inches).
Other local winners include Vandebilt’s Christopher Watson in the boys pole vault (13 feet), Thibodaux’s Erica Watkins in the girls pole vault (8 feet), and Ellender’s boys 400-meter relay team (43:37).
