April 22, 2010All of the 40-yard dashes have been timed; all of the Wonderlic tests have been scored and graded.
It’s now time for the 32 teams of the NFL to take action to script their futures.
The almost larger than life phenomenon called the NFL Draft will begin tomorrow, and all seven rounds will be completed by Saturday.
In total, 255 players will hear their names called in the three-day event. Of that, several LSU players are expected to be asked to take their talents to the next level.
Listed below are the LSU prospects hoping for luck in the draft and some of their most recent Mock Draft projections.
Chad Jones:
6’3, 218
Safety
If Jones isn’t LSU’s first player picked, he will certainly be among the top. The safety opted for the NFL early following his junior year and his stock has stayed relatively steady throughout the entire workout progress.
Projections:
Draftsite.com = No. 49 overall pick (2nd round) by San Francisco 49ers
Walterfootball.com = No. 60 overall pick (2nd round) by Seattle Seahawks
Bleacherreport.com = No. 59 overall pick (2nd round) by Dallas Cowboys
Brandon LaFell:
6’2, 211
Wide receiver
LaFell terrorized Southeastern Conference defenses throughout his career at LSU, but opinions seem to differ on his NFL future. He doesn’t possess the massive size of the big possession receivers in the league like Terrell Owens or Calvin Johnson, and he doesn’t have the speed of the likes of a Wes Welker or a Steve Breaston, so some general managers are curious to see how the former Tiger will fit into the NFL.
Projections:
Draftsite.com = No. 78 overall pick (3rd round) by Carolina Panthers
Walterfootball.com = No. 82 overall pick (3rd round) by Pittsburgh Steelers
Bleacherreport.com = No. 43 overall pick (2nd round) by Miami Dolphins
Ciron Black
6’4, 327
Offensive line
Like LaFell, Black is projected as sort of an in-between player at the next level, and as a result, there is a discrepancy in where he may be selected. Some say Black can be a tackle, but others say he lacks the athleticism and would be better suited to move inside and be a guard. Most project the offensive lineman somewhere in the third through fifth rounds.
Projections:
Draftsite.com = No. 111 overall pick (4th round) by Tennessee Titans
Walterfootball.com = No. 116 overall pick (4th round) by Pittsburgh Steelers
Bleacherreport.com = No. 70 overall pick (3rd round) by Philadelphia Eagles
Charles Scott
5’11, 232
Halfback
Scott returned for his senior year after a monstrous junior year had him tempted to test the NFL. Unfortunately for the powerback, his senior year was not his best as he struggled when healthy and suffered a season-ending broken collarbone in the team’s loss to Alabama. But scouts say Scott has worked out well in anticipation for the draft, and he should be a late round pick. But teams are still fearful about his injury.
Projections:
Draftsite.com = No. 180 overall pick (6th round) by Jacksonville Jaguars
Walterfootball.com = Undrafted
Bleacherreport.com = No. 212 overall pick (7th round) by Miami Dolphins
Al Woods
6’3, 307
Defensive tackle
Woods is one LSU player who scouts tout did help himself in the predraft workouts. Thanks to a strong showing, the defensive lineman has moved from possibly being undrafted into the late or mid rounds according to some projections. His 23 bench press reps was a tie for the most among all LSU prospects and his 37-inch vertical leap was higher than every LSU prospect except Trindon Holliday, who leapt 42-inches.
Projections:
Draftsite.com = No. 170 overall pick (6th round) by St. Louis Rams
Walterfootball.com = No. 193 overall pick (6th round) by Green Bay Packers
Bleacherreport.com = No. 200 overall pick (6th round) by Philadelphia Eagles
In addition to the five players listed above, several other Tigers could be late round picks or free agent signees once the draft is completed.
Listed here are other Tigers entered into the NFL Draft.
