The Nicholls Colonels committed eight costly errors to suffer a 7-2 loss to Stony Brook, Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels posted three runs on just four hits, while committing eight errors, while the Seawolves recorded seven runs on 10 hits.

Justin Breaux (1-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits through 3.2 innings of work. Kurt Jung (1-2) picked up the win, giving up just one earned run, while scattering three hits through seven innings.

Patrick Thompson finished the game, going 1-for-1 at the plate with a homerun, RBI and run scored. Walter Jones, Brett Hoeflich and Shane Barksdale recorded the three other hits for Nicholls. Brian Witkowski was the only Stony Brook player to have a multiple hit game, as he finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, a sacrifice, walk and one run scored.

Stony Brook jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the second.

Witkowski led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and went to second on a Chris Sipp walk. After sacrifice bunt by Michael Stephan advanced the runners to second and third, a Michael Tansey RBI groundout to second base scored Witkowski for the first run of the game.

In the second inning, a Chris Cruz walk and Keith Fier single up the middle put runners on first and second base with one out. After pulling off a successful double steal, consecutive RBI singles by Witkowski and Sipp scored Cruz and Fier, giving the Seawolves a three-run advantage.

The Seawolves extended their lead with three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. Two hits and three costly Colonel errors contributed in giving Stony Brook a 6-0 lead.

Stony Brook added a run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, consecutive singles by Leonard and Mazzurco put runners at first and second. Cruz followed with a single to right field, but Colonel right fielder, A.J. DeLaneuville, bobbled the ball, allowing Robert Leonard to score, and widen the gap to 7-0.

Nicholls trimmed the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. A two-out triple by Shane Barksdale scored Jones, who had earlier walked.

The Colonels added two more runs in their half of the eighth inning. DeLaneuville led off the inning with a walk, and came around to score on pinch hitter Patrick Thompson’s homerun over the right field wall, to cut the deficit to 7-3.

On Saturday, the Colonels split a double header with Stony Brook. After losing the series’ opener 8-6, Nicholls won the nightcap 3-2, in extra innings.

Nicholls will end their six-game homestand on Tuesday as they host Southern at 5 p.m.

Nicholls men’s tennis falls 5-2
