December 28, 2007Leadership, quickness and scoring are just a few of the skills that Katherine Plummer brings to the Nicholls State women’s basketball team.
“It’s her leadership that sets her apart,” said Lady Colonels coach Mark Cook. “Everyone can count on her to step up and make the big play.”
A Brooklyn native, Plummer started playing with her brothers when she was only eight years old.
“Cat,” as she is called because of her cat-like quickness, says she brings a taste of the old neighborhood to the hardwood every time she plays.
“That’s all my game, the way I dribble, my swag [confidence] on the court, and my speed,” she explained.
Not surprisingly, Brooklyn is very different than Thibodaux.
“It’s faster, the competition is tougher, there’s a lot of trash talk and your feelings do get hurt,” she said. “It’s a jungle out there and you’re like a small animal, but it helps make you better.”
Plummer said she came to NSU because it was the best option and the best opportunity.
The Lady Colonels are glad she did.
Plummer is the leading scorer, quickest player and, overall, “the best player on the team,” according to her coach.
Through last week, she led Nicholls State in scoring (14.4 points per game), assists (4.4), steals (3.6) and minutes (39.0).
Plummer said the team is struggling thus far but things are starting to fall in place. “We’re starting to feel the game together,” she said. “We just need about two more people to step up.”
To calm her nerves, Plummer reads her Bible before every game. For a New Year’s resolution, she hopes to win the Southland Conference title and be named Conference Player of the Year.
After college, Plummer said she’d like to try to play professional basketball if the opportunity came up, but she is really looking forward to becoming a coach.
“Coaching was always a passion – to see all the bad things and to see how you were coached and pass it along to others,” she said. “It’s a great feeling.”
