Between last week’s Region 3-II and Region 2-III results, 21 Tri-parish athletes and one relay team will compete in Saturday’s state high school track and field championships at LSU.

At Tuesday’s Region 3-II meet held at Hoss Memstas Stadium, Vandebilt Catholic qualified 11 athletes, including four regional champions. Morgan City is sending two girls in individual events and its boys’ 1,600-meter relay team.

Terriers Jaora Johnson and Katie Watson (pole vault), Emma Gaienne (javelin) and Emily Carrere (1,600-meter run) won first place in their respective events.

Vandebilt finished second with 76 points in the girls’ team scoring to Cabrini’s 106. The boys placed fourth with 48 points.

“We did better than expected given the level of competition,” said David Malone, Vandebilt boys track coach. “We had a couple of guys miss qualifying by an arm’s length, but overall, we did very well.”

While first-year Morgan City track coach Charles Bravata Jr. thought highly of the way his team performed, he was especially pleased by the boys’ 1,600-meter relay team.

“If it wasn’t for Vernon Norwood running his butt off on the anchor leg, they wouldn’t have made it,” he said. “I think he ran a 48.9 split.”

At Wednesday’s Region 2-III meet at the University of Louisiana Lafayette, E.D. White Catholic and Berwick qualified three athletes each, and Patterson is sending one to the state meet.

Cardinal junior Lindsey Constant qualified in two events, winning the girls’ 1,600-meter run in 5:46.30 and placing second in the 800-meter run.

Patterson junior Alan Angeron won the boys’ 800-meter run in 2:03:80.
