A combination of six Colonel quarterback turnovers, and the Bearkats’ D.D. Terry rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns resulted in the 37-7 victory for Sam Houston State Saturday evening. The Colonels also finished the game with 7 penalties that totaled 60 yards, which added more frustration to the 30-point defeat.

“We can not afford to play like we did today if we expect to win,” said head coach Jay Thomas, “we should not be making that many mistakes in the sixth week of the season.”

The Bearkats (4-2, 2-0) got on the scoreboard first after an 8-play drive that covered 49-yards in 3:17 time. D.D. Terry punched it in from 3-yards out, and the point after attempt by Taylor Wilkins failed. The touchdown was the result of a Vincent Montgomery fumble that the Bearkats took advantage of, and went on top 6-0.

Vincent Montgomery led the charge on the ensuing drive and brought the Colonels into the red zone, but Montgomery lost control of the ball once again.

Nicholls’ defense did bend, but did not break as they limited the Bearkats to a field goal try, which Wilkins missed off the upright.

“Our defense did all they could out there today,” said Thomas, “our offense did not help our defense at all in the game.”

The Colonels (2-4, 1-1) offense took over at the 20-yard line, and was forced to punt after three plays. Montgomery did break a long run that would have put the Colonels into Bearkats’ territory, but it was called back due to a penalty. The first quarter ended 6-0 Bearkats.

Early in the second quarter, Terry scored his second touchdown of the game from one-yard out, and the Bearkats went on top 13-0 at the 10:32 mark of the second quarter.

The Colonels defense rose to the occasion, and kept the Bearkats out of the end zone for the rest of the second quarter. Nicholls forced two turnovers.

Chris Bunch took over at quarterback, and guided the team to pay dirt when he took it in himself from a yard out. Alex Romero’s point after attempt was good, and Nicholls trailed 13-7 with 53 seconds left in the first half.

“Even though we had a lot of turnovers, I thought we had some momentum going into the locker room at the half,” said Thomas about his teams first half performance. “We self-destructed out there.”

†The third quarter remained a stalemate until Bearkats’ quarterback Brett Hicks hit Michael Malone at the 3:18 mark for a nine-yard touchdown. The scoring drive tallied 43-yards on 8-plays, and Wilkins’ extra point attempt was good. Sam Houston State went up 20-7.

The Bearkats’ Terry turned an NSU fumble into his third touchdown of the game, with his 36-yard touchdown run. The drive went 73-yards on 5-plays and used 2:23 of game clock. Sam Houston State led 27-7.

The Bearkats would go onto win 37-7 and improve to a perfect 2-0 in Southland Conference play, while Nicholls falls to 1-1.

“We are going to have to get better, and just give the extra effort,” said Thomas, “we have a lot to improve on before next week.”

The Colonels will face Northwestern State at John L. Guidry Stadium next Saturday.
