SportsNet Week 1 Players of the Week:
Bronze: South Terrebonne junior quarterback Trevon Smith – In his first game as the full-time Gators starting quarterback, Smith completed 13-of-16 passes for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-18 South Terrebonne road victory against Comeaux High School.
Silver: Thibodaux senior halfback Joshua Johnson – In a thrilling, three overtime win against McDonogh 35, Johnson rushed 25 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns to help the Tigers earn a 50-44 win. The halfback also had a passing touchdown on a trick play in the victory.
Gold: Vandebilt quarterback T.J. Cantrelle – Just one year after being shutout by rival E.D. White, the Terriers quarterback returned early from an ankle injury to lead the Terriers to a win. Cantrelle completed 11-of-20 passes in the game.
The Super 6 power rankings (ranking Casey Gisclair’s six best Tri-parish teams):
1. Terrebonne – Anytime you beat someone 70-0, you’re doing something right. The Tigers are strong this year.
2. Thibodaux – McDonogh 35 is no slouch. Very big win for the Tigers.
3. South Terrebonne – Year in and year out, Comeaux is a stout team. To get a road win against those guys is a solid start to the season.
4. Vanderbilt – The Terriers return plenty, and flexed their muscles in a close win against rival E.D. White.
5. Patterson – Sure, the Lumberjacks got waxed on opening night. But not many in the state are better than East St. John. They’ll be back.
6. Central Lafourche – These guys didn’t miss a beat on opening night in a rout. Will see how the young Trojans hold up the remainder of the season.
