August 5, 2010Saints sign cornerback Robinson to 5-year deal
Every member of the New Orleans Saints’ 2010 draft class is now signed.
The team’s first-round draft choice Patrick Robinson inked himself to a 5-year deal Thursday just in time for Friday’s start of training camp.
The Florida State cornerback was the final Saints’ draftee to sign on the dotted line, joining Miami tight end Jimmy Graham and USC left tackle Charles Brown, who signed earlier in the week.
Robinson is expected to provide depth to the Saints’ experienced, but sometimes injury prone secondary.
He is expected to spend plenty of time in the nickel slot of the lineup behind starters Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer.
Tri-parish school set to be showcased on ESPN
ESPN will shine the bayou area’s “Friday Night Lights” to a nationwide audience Sept. 10.
Patterson and Redemptorist high schools signed an agreement last Thursday to play each other on ESPNU next season.
“I think it’s great exposure for our program and for our community,” said Patterson head coach Tommy Minton.
The game will feature LSU verbal commitment Kenny Hilliard of Patterson take on fellow future Tigers La’El Collins and Jeremy Hill of Redemptorist at John L. Guidry Stadium on the campus of Nicholls State University.
Before the deal, Patterson was slated to play Westgate, and Redemptorist was supposed to play St. James Sept 10.
Minton said ESPN requested a matchup between Patterson and Redemptorist, so the two schools broke their agreements.
Westgate will now play St. James Sept. 10.
Paul non-committal about Monday meeting
Last Monday’s nationally-known meeting has come and passed and Hornets’ guard Chris Paul’s future with the team is as cloudy as ever.
The guard gave the team what they perceived as good news following the meeting and stated he did not demand a trade at the meeting with general manager Dell Demps and new coach Monty Williams.
But just a day later, reports surfaced that Paul still wants out of New Orleans and just didn’t formally request a trade because he didn’t want to damage his public image.
The guard had his annual CP3 Camp this week in New Orleans, and he was non-committal about his future and didn’t deny he wanted to be traded, but rather said the timing now “wasn’t right.”
“There will be a time,” Paul told ESPN. “Everything else we talked about [in Monday’s meeting with the club], like Mr. Demps said, we want to keep some of that stuff private.”
3 Colonels named to the All-Southland preseason team
A trio of Nicholls State football players were named to the All-Southland Conference preseason team last Wednesday.
Colonels’ punter Patrick Dolan was named to the First Team with defensive back Bobby Felder and offensive lineman Brandon Ward earning a spot on the second team.
“This is great recognition for these young men, and we will look for them to lead us in the 2010 campaign,” said Colonels’ coach Charlie Stubbs.
Aside from the selections, the Colonels didn’t receive much love at the Southland Conference Media Days.
Nicholls was picked to finish dead last in the coach’s poll and seventh out of eight teams in the Sports Information Director’s poll.
Jefferson named to Manning Award Watch List
LSU junior quarterback Jordan Jefferson was named to the 2010 Manning Award Watch List, an award that is presented annually to the nation’s best collegiate quarterback.
Jefferson found his spot on the list after tossing 17 touchdowns last season with the Tigers.
The quarterback was the youngest LSU quarterback to ever start a season opening game (19), and many figure with a full season of experience under his belt, he will achieve more success in the new season.
“I have high goals for myself, and I’m ready to accomplish those things. I learned a lot last year,” Jefferson said in a release issued by LSU. “We weren’t quite as successful last year. My wisdom has gotten better from my failure in certain games, and I’m looking to be a leader for these guys and enjoy my time at LSU. I am going to make sure the seniors leave the field on a good note.”
A list of 10 finalists for the award will be released on Nov. 29.
LSU volleyball to be feature on TV 3 times this season
Fresh off a 25-7 season that saw the team post an 18-2 Southeastern Conference record, the LSU volleyball team will be showcased on national TV three times in the upcoming season.
LSU’s Oct. 13 home match with Arkansas will be televised on ESPNU.
Just two days later, the Tigers’ road match with Ole Miss will be showcased on Fox Sports Net.
And LSU’s pivotal matchup with SEC power Florida Nov. 21 will be shown on CST.
“Our program is always extremely excited and honored to represent LSU on the national stage,” LSU volleyball coach Fran Flory said. “We’re very grateful to have the opportunity to showcase our program to a national audience. All three matches promise to be exciting. We look forward to having ESPNU and CST back at the PMAC.”
