March 28, 2008The Terrebonne Lady Tigers ran away with the girls’ title while the St. James Wildcats outdistanced the competition for the boys’ title at the Nollie Arcement Relays held at Central Lafourche last Thursday.
Terrebonne won six girls events, helping earn the team 107 points. Vandebilt came in second with 83 and Newman was third with 79.
St. James conquered four boys’ contests, helping earn the team 108 points. South Terrebonne was second with 87 and H.L. Bourgeios came in third with 78.
Among Terrebonne’s winners were Skyla Jackson in the 1,600-meter run (6:03:12) and the 3,200-meter run (12:56:00), Cierra Bonvillian in the 800-meter run (2:36:61), Aline Verdin in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches), and Sierra Lyons in the shot put (37 feet, 6.25 inches).
Terrebonne also won the girls’ 1,600-meter relay in 4:21:95.
Vandebilt’s pole vault superstar Rachel Laurent set a personal best and broke her own meet record with a leap of 14 feet. Her twin sister Amber finished second at 10 feet.
Rachel, the country’s top prep pole vaulter, is just two inches short of the national high school girls’ record set by Mary Saxter in 2005.
Thibodaux, which came in fourth in the women’s division with 72.5 points, won the 400-meter relay (52.55) and 800-meter relay (1:51:46).
St. James got boys victories from Jarrun Hillaire in the high jump (6 feet, 6 inches), Luther Ambrose in the 100-meter dash (10:62), and team wins in the 400-meter relay (43:20) and 800-meter relay (1:30:77).
H.L. Bourgeious’ Caleb Williams was named boys Field MVP for winning the long jump (22 feet, 2.5 inches), triple jump (43 feet, 6.75 inches) and 400-meter dash (50.24).
Assumption’s Dax Johnson was named boys Track MVP for winning the 200-meter dash (22.67) and placing second in 100 meter (10.92).
Central Laforche’s Kiera Smith was named girls Field MVP for winning the discus (101 feet, 1 inch) and placing third in the shot put.
Newman’s Lily Miller was named girls Track MVP for winning 100-meter dash (12:35), 400 meter (1:00:27), and long jump (17 feet, 10.5 inches).
South Terrebonne won four events: Rachel Glaxner in girls’ 110-meter hurdles, Jake Thibodaux in boys 800-meter run, Chase Meanard in boys 3,200-meter run and Deondre Young boys 110-meter hurdles.
Besides Williams, H.L. won two other boys events: Stanley Lyons in the 300-meter hurdles and the 1,600-meter relay.
For fourth place Vandebilt, Christopher Watson won the boys pole vault and Joel Ross won the shot put.
For sixth place Thibodaux, Robertson Marcus won the javelin and Jamal King won the discus.
