September 6, 2007The Terriers slipped away with a victory Friday night against E.D. White Cardinals in a competitive, rival game. With a new coach and a new season, Vandebilt Catholic Terriers showed that their hard work paid off especially defensively.
“I’m excited about the win, but we need to get way better. We must eliminate the mental mistakes and breakdowns,” said Vandebilt coach Mark King after his first victory as a head coach.
King explained that he was pleased with his guys’ all-around performance in the win Friday, but there is a lot of work to be done in order to get better including improving kick-off returns and offense in the red-zone.
The first quarter started with three turnovers – two interceptions and a fumble. Vandebilt’s Chez Morrison, who pulled in two interceptions, nabbed the first with 7:52 left on the board.
E.D. White’s Chris Callahan pulled in an interception to answer back, and Clinton Clement jumped on a fumble for the Cardinals.
However, the Terriers’ first touchdown would come in the second quarter after an 80-yard push down the field in 14 plays resulting in a touchdown run by Dexter Smith.
Smith would be the leading rusher that night with 113 yards in 15 carries.
Smith was excited about his performance but even more excited about the team effort and humbly said, “With the Lord by our side, we can do all things.”
E.D. White scored in the second quarter and again in the third to make the score 14-7, but the Terriers held strong and answered back with a touchdown of their own on a seven-yard screen play to Welch.
The determining play, however, proved to be an intentional grounding call on the Cardinals in their own end zone, resulting in a safety that put the Terriers up 16-14 in the fourth quarter.
Two interceptions later the Terriers were forced to punt. However, on the next play, Jared Theriot would intercept a pass to give the Terriers possession of the ball with 29 seconds left in the game.
Quarterback Evan Mistich took a knee on the next play to make it final.
Mistich would finish the game completing 3 of 9 passes with three interceptions and 57 yards rushing, while E.D. White quarterback Drey Trosclair would complete 6 of 15 passes with three interceptions and minus two yards rushing.
E.D. White will host the Assumption Mustangs Friday.
Brother Martin Crusaders 35, Central Lafourche Trojans 13
Central Lafourche Trojans had a hard time against Brother Martin mainly because of turnovers. The Trojans gained more yards than the Crusaders but lost the ball in crucial situations giving away the momentum.
Central will play again next Friday at Belle Chasse.
Ellender Patriots 35,
Terrebonne Tigers 17
Ellender fought back to defeat the Terrebonne Tigers Friday. Ellender’s offense stepped it up in the second half to come back and surpass the Tigers.
Getting their lead in the second half, the Patriots kept on pushing to earn 22 unanswered points.
Next Friday, the Ellender Patriots will host South Terrebonne.
H.L. Bourgeois Braves 48,
St. John-Plaquemine Eagles 15
H.L. Bourgeois Braves demolished the St. John Plaquemine Eagles with their explosive offense. The Eagles couldn’t stand up to the pounding Braves offense and sturdy defense. The Braves’ offense gained 348 yards and took the momentum early.
The Braves will play at Dutchtown next week.
South Lafourche Tarpons 6,
St. Charles Catholic 30
The South Lafourche Tarpons fell short to St. Charles Catholic’s dynamic offense. The Comets outgained the Tarpons in yardage 271-163.
St. Charles’s Jonathan Cancienne carried the ball 19 times for 129 total yards.
Miscommunications on defense may have accounted for the Tarpons’ loss.
South Lafourche got on the board however with an 80-yard run from Wade Bagala in the fourth quarter.
The Tarpons will host J.S. Clark next Friday.
South Terrebonne 49, Douglass 12
South Terrebonne upset Douglas Thursday night.
The Gators stepped it up a notch from last week’s jamboree and came away with a victory.
South Terrebonne will travel to Ellender Memorial High School next week to take on the Patriots again after falling short to them once already this season.
West Monroe 42, Thibodaux 7
West Monroe pounced on the Thibodaux Tigers in a hurry and grasped a win. The game was soon out of hand and the Rebels were extremely aggressive offensively and defensively to win by a large margin.
Thibodaux will host Vandebilt Catholic on Friday.
