Law enforcement makes arrest in 15-year-old priest murder case
September 19, 2007Vandebilt held strong defensively in the red zone to defeat Central Lafourche, 13-7, Friday in a non-district game at Buddy Marcello Stadium.
Curtis Welch led the Terriers with 90 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries in the first half alone en route to gaining a total of 114 yards on 16 carries for the game.
The Terriers drew first blood, but it wasn’t until the second quarter.
After a few missed tackles, Welch broke free and found the end zone on 58-yard run.
Vandebilt was able to take advantage of a Central Lafourche turnover shortly later and drove 70 yards down the field, setting up Welch’s second touchdown.
The extra point was blocked, and the Terriers ended up taking a 13-0 lead into the half.
“Offensively, our game plan did change throughout the game,” said Vandebilt coach Mark King. “We needed to move the ball better.”
Central Lafourche seemed to come out hot in the second half with a great return on the kick-off, only to see it called back because of a holding penalty.
Despite the penalty, the Trojans marched 67 yards downfield in the next seven plays and put points on the board with a 14-yard pass to Cullen Orgeron.
This, however, would end up being the Trojans only score of the night.
Byron Thomas led Central Lafourche with 76 yards on nine carries. Trojan quarterback Neal Foret would go 3-for-7 with one touchdown in the loss.
Both sides stepped it up defensively in the fourth quarter. With 1:32 left in the game, Central Lafourche would end up in the red zone, first and goal, with an opportunity to tie or possibly win the game. But on fourth down, Foret looked to pass right. He was chased out of the pocket and stopped short of a touchdown to give Vandebilt possession.
Terrier quarterback Evan Mistich ran for a first down with 27 seconds left to assure the win.
Mistich finished 3-for-6 with 71 yards passing.
Vandebilt coach Mark King explained that defensive perseverance is something he preaches. He also established that both teams played extremely well.
“Central Lafourche played a good game and we have to give them credit for that,” he said.
In his first year, King is 3-0 with wins against E.D. White, Thibodaux, and now Central Lafourche.
