It was a classic David vs. Goliath matchup Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium.

On one hand was the mighty LSU baseball team – a powerful program that has won six national championships in the past two decades.

On the other was little ‘ol Nicholls State – a program picked to finish last place in the Southland Conference.

When all of the punches were thrown, Goliath won the battle – but not by as much as most would expect.

Thanks to a two-run sixth inning, the Tigers outlasted the Colonels 2-0 to complete a weekend tournament at LSU.

The sixth inning spark spoiled the efforts of Nicholls starter Taylor Byrd, who spun a gem and didn’t allow a hit through five innings of work.

The win marked an undefeated weekend for LSU, who is now 10-1 on the season.

The setback pushed Nicholls to 7-5 on the year and marked the completion of a 1-2 weekend.

Before losing to LSU, the Colonels topped Brown on Sunday morning.
