One of the best football players in the area is going to the Far West to play his college football.

Ellender Memorial three-star wide receiver DaVontavean Martin announced on Twitter this week that he is going to sign with Washington State – a pass-happy Pac 12 school that compliments his style well.

Martin, a 6-foot, 4-inch receiver visited the Cougars this past weekend, saying he loved the school, its tradition and the coaching staff.

On Twitter, Martin said he is closing down his recruitment and will not be taking any other calls from coaches in advance of Signing Day, which is next week.

“I want to thank every coach who recruited me,” Martin said on his Twitter post. “(You) spent valuable time building a relationship with me and my family. I feel very blessed to be able to continue my education and playing career.”

Martin’s path to Washington State University is the ending to a year’s worth of flirtations between the standout athlete and universities across the country.

Martin first generated collegiate interest as a basketball star, and he’s currently still listed as one of the top senior players in Louisiana.

He committed to UNO for basketball last year, then decommitted from the program, because he said he wanted a school where he could possibly play both sports.

This past season, Martin committed to Tulane, because the Green Wave were reportedly allowing him the chance to be a two-sport athlete at the next level.

But after rushing for 495 yards and catching 45 passes for 751 yards as a senior, larger schools started to jump on Martin, which led to his stating publicly that he would focus only on football at the next level.

Martin chose the Cougars over interest from Wake Forest, Virginia, Louisiana Tech, Toledo, East Carolina and Southern Mississippi, among others.
