Prep Football Week 6 by the Numbers
30: The number of total yards South Lafourche’s defense limited Westgate to in the opening half of Friday’s win. The Tarpons’ defense stifled the Tigers’ struggling spread attack.
308: The number of yards Houma Christian racked up in a blowout win against Ecole Classique. The Warriors improved to 3-2 on the season with the win.
88: The combined points Assumption and Ellender combined to score in Friday’s shootout. The Patriots were on the short end of the scoreboard, dropping their second-straight game.
Week 6 players of the week:
Bronze: South Terrebonne halfback Justin Johnson – South Terrebonne fell flat against Vandebilt, but it wasn’t because of Johnson, who rushed for 194 yards on 24 carries. The bruising, physical back added a pair of touchdowns on the night, as well.
Silver: Vandebilt quarterback Elijah McGuire – Against rival South Terrebonne, McGuire was his usual outstanding self on Friday, rushing for 184 yards on just seven carries. The dominant effort put the Terriers’ stud past the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
Gold: South Lafourche linebacker/safety Braxton Acosta – In the first quarter of Friday’s game against Westgate, Acosta recovered an onside kick, blocked a punt and recovered a fumble. How’s that for a ball-hawk? With starting quarterback Colby Callais out of the lineup, Acosta’s efforts helped push the Tarpons past a depleted Westgate team.
The Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)
1. South Lafourche – Without Colby Callais, South Lafourche wasn’t as dominant as normal, mostly limping to a sound win against Westgate. The game of the season in local Class 5A action will be Friday night when the 5-0 Tarpons take on 5-1 New Iberia. That game is sure to be a war.
2. Vandebilt – Elijah McGuire never ceases to amaze me. In just six games this year, the dominant Terrier standout has more than 1,000 yards. Colleges around the country really need to take note and offer this man a scholarship. Aside from McGuire’s prowess, the rest of the Terriers’ team is slowly rounding into shape, as well – these guys are good.
3. Central Catholic – After South Lafourche and Vandebilt, the rest of our Power 6 is a mess. We’ll go with the Eagles at No. 3 after scoring an easy win on Friday. Coach Fuhrer’s group is appearing to round into form after a disappointing early-season start.
4. E.D. White – E.D. White got mashed Friday at the hands of a very good Brusly team. But there are just not enough solid suitors locally to kick them down any notches from last week’s position. The Cardinals are a veteran group and we suspect they’ll rebound.
5. Morgan City – The Tigers ate defeat for the first time in 2012 in a stunning loss against Franklin. Morgan City will tangle with Ellender on Thursday night at South Terrebonne in what could be a winner-take-all game in terms of playoff seeding.
6. Terrebonne – One week after getting pounded by South Lafourche, Terrebonne circled the wagons and scored a thrilling comeback win against pesky Central Lafourche. That was a must-win game for a Tigers team scrambling for power points.
