Three suspects are in custody of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office after a toddler received severe burns but didn’t receive medical attention.

On May 31, deputies responded to a residence in the 100 block of Park Drive in Thibodaux in reference to an unsupervised toddler found outside a residence who appeared to be burned on the arms and legs.

Deputies located the child’s mother, identifying her as Amber Cook, 33, of Berwick. She indicated that she was resting inside the residence and didn’t know the child was outside.

Cook said the burns were caused by hot wax from a wax burner falling on the child the previous night. Investigators learned that the mother failed to seek medical attention despite the severity of the burns.

The mother is currently staying with Francisco Perez, 39 and Hilda Perez, 43, both of Thibodaux, and authorities said both suspects allegedly knew of the severity of the incident, but took no action in terms of getting the child medical attention.

After authorities arrived, the child was taken by ambulance to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

Following an investigation, all three suspects were arrested on Thursday.

Francisco and Perez were charged with one count each of cruelty to a juvenile.

They are held on $25,000 bonds. Cook is charged with cruelty to a juvenile and improper supervision of a minor by a parent. She is held on a $30,000 bond.

According to the release issued by LPSO, the toddler and Cook’s two other children were taken into custody of the Louisiana Children and Family Services.
