A south Lafourche man was given life in prison for murdering Shawn Galjour.

Judge John E. LeBlanc ruled on Monday morning that Robert Chouest will serve the sentence without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence after he killed Galjour — the completion of a long, lengthy court case that was deemed a mistrial once, then which rendered a guilty verdict in January.

Galjour’s father Alton prepared a statement, which was read to LeBlanc by prosecuting attorney Heather Hendrix.

In it, the family said it supports the sentencing.

“Because of Robert Chouest, I am now painfully aware that there is violence and evil in this world,” the statement reads. “In my eyes, there will never be true justice for Shawn, but I am eternally grateful for the peace that is being brought to me and my family by this court here today.”

Chouest was given an opportunity to speak to the victim’s family at sentencing, but declined.
