July 28, 2018The dream came true for Houma native Justin Williams – at least for a day.
He finally was able to play in the Big Leagues.
Williams was called up to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday morning after spending all of his 2018 season to that point with the Durham Bulls.
As part of the move, the Rays optioned Hoby Milner down.
Williams, a Terrebonne High School graduate, has been in professional baseball since 2013, when he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Since a trade to the Rays, Williams has shined, posting multiple accolades, while also being named to both the Double-A and Triple-A All-Star Teams, including this year.
In Durham, Williams was hitting .297 with 8 home runs and 45 RBI at the time of his call-up.
The move was temporary He played in Saturday’s game, entering as a sub and generating an at-bat in a contest against the Miami Marlins.
After completion, he was sent bad down to Durham where he will continue his journey.
Williams said this past offseason that making the Big Leagues would be a life-long dream.
“All I’ve ever wanted to do is play in the Big Leagues,” Williams said this past offseason “That’s been my dream far as far as I can remember. It takes a lot of work and you have to put in a lot of time and a lot of effort to get there* I’m living that right now. But I’m motivated and I’m willing to do whatever I have to do to get to that level and ludrily, I’m in a great organization that is working with me to make me into the best player that I ran be, which makes me really confident as well.”
Williams is widely expected to be back in the Major Leagues at same point-either later this season or in the future.
His next stay is likely to be longer than one day.
