While most people make resolutions that center around personal achievements, the New Year is also a great time to make family resolutions and set goals for the upcoming year. Use the New Year as a way to start new, healthy habits with your family and plan to make the most out of 2018!

1. PUT DOWN THE ELECTRONICS– Set some new rules for your household that include less time spent on electronic devices and more time just being with one another. Start small; try no electronics at the dinner table for starters.

2. GET YOUR MOVE ON

– Start a family exercise regiment. You might start taking a walk around the neighborhood after dinner or sign-up for family-friendly classes like yoga.

3. MAKE HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES

– Work on meal planning that includes a few more veggies for example. Starting off each day with a healthy breakfast goes a long way too. Try quick options like smoothies or oatmeal.

4. LIQUID HAPPINESS

– Along with making healthy food choices, adjust the kind of liquid your family consumes. Choose water or milk instead of soda.

5. BE THANKFUL

– Teach your family about gratitude. For little ones, ask them what made them happy today each night at bedtime. For older children, help them start a journal where they can write down the things they are grateful for. Parents, you need to do this too! Once a month, gather together and share your thoughts.

6. FAMILY DATE NIGHT

– As busy as our schedules tend to be with work, school and extracurricular activities, be sure to schedule a monthly family date that no one is exempt from. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate event. Gather together for family game night or movie night.

7. ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE

– Go on an adventure with your family. While a family trip to Europe might be a bit out of the budget, there are so many ways to bring your family on a little adventure. Did you know Louisiana has almost two dozen state parks? Explore your hometown or maybe the neighboring one.

Let each child select an outing that the whole family must participate in.

8. BECOME A ROLE MODEL

– So this one is technically for the parents, but it benefits the whole family. With everything you do, your children are watching. They take their cues from you on everything, from how to behave and certain reactions to things to their choice of words. Make a conscious effort to be the person you want your child to be. As you set new goals, be sure you abide by them as well. Ask your child to help you too. Remind them why you are making the choice to drink water instead of soda and invite them to do the same.
