Louisiana residents who lost their homes during the 2008 economic crisis may be due a small respite from the state.

State Treasurer John Kennedy announced the state received $2.4 million from a foreclosure settlement with mortgage servicers related to the 2008 credit crisis. More than 4,000 borrowers in Louisiana are owed money from the settlement.

The treasurer urged those whose homes were foreclosed on when the housing bubble burst to see if they are in line for settlement money. According to Kennedy, the average borrower is owed at least $300.

“If you lost your home to foreclosure during the national credit crisis, check our Unclaimed Property database to see if you’re owed some money,” Kennedy said.

Louisiana residents can check LATreasury.com or call the Treasury’s hotline at 1-888-925-4127 to see if they have unclaimed money.
