A Thibodaux woman stole meat, ribs and other groceries from a local store.
Why?
She says it’s because of her diabetes.
On Monday, Jan. 16, Thibodaux Police was called to a grocery store in the 600 block of Lafourche Drive in reference to a robbery.
A day before, store workers said a woman, later identified as Amy Stevens, 42, of Thibodaux, went into the store and was seen on surveillance taking two packs of ground meat, one pack of ribs and one pack of frozen fish – stuffing the items into her purse.
On Jan. 20, TPD located Stevens at her home, placing her under arrest and charging her with a misdemeanor summons for theft.
The suspect denied taking the items at the time of her arrest.
The next day, the same suspect was stopped by management at a different grocery store in the 200 block of North Canal Boulevard after she was allegedly seen trying to leave the store with items under her jacket.
Authorities said Stevens hit the manager in the face with her elbow, dropping four packs of seafood and four packs of steaks from under her jacket as she fled the business.
The suspect left her purse behind in the second burglary, which had her identification card in it.
TPD spoke to Stevens on the phone after learning she was not at home.
The suspect admitted she tried to steal the items, but said it was because she was a diabetic.
She returned home around 9 p.m. and was arrested on a charge of attempted theft.
She is held on a $1,000 bond.
