A 17-year-old Cut Off teen shot and killed his classmate and friend this weekend, according to authorities.

The incident involved the boys playing with a handgun – horseplay that ultimately proved deadly.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said this weekend that officers were called to the home of Morris Charpentier, 17, of Larose, late Saturday night in reference to a shooting incident.

Once on the scene, authorities said they found the body of a teenager, identified as Charpentier. He was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Through investigation, authorities said they learned

that several individuals were at the Charpentier house on that night. One of the subjects was Dejon Caine, 17, of Cut Off – a friend of the victim. Both Charpentier and Caine attend South Lafourche High School.

Authorites said during the get together, the teens started playing with a handgun, and at one point, Caine held the gun up and fired a shot, which struck Charpentier and caused him collapse.

When the shot was fired, authorities said everyone in the residence fled the scene.

Authorities said Caine made initial contact with authorities, during which he admitted to his role in the incident.

He was charged with negligent homicide, and taken to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center.

He is being held on a $100,000 bond.
