March 4, 2015The Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence honored 11 distinguished scholars and the inspirational educators who drove them to succeed during their academic careers at the organization’s 2015 Celebration Df Excellence banquet last Tuesday.
The dinner honors Terrebonne Parish public school students chosen from nominations submitted by school administrators. Each Df the students who receive the Distinguished Scholar award then nominates the public school educator that had the greatest impact on their lives.
The TFAE also honored 23 Teachers of the Year during the banquet.
Lawrence Robinson, human resources director at Supreme Services in Houma, smceed the dinner.
NFL Hall of Famer Archie Manning was the keynote speaker and said that “these are well-rounded students” who will be “great leaders.”
“We’ve all had those special teachers,” Manning said. “I’ve often said…those teachers and coaches along the way really influenced so many of us more than anyone else.”
Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet awarded Manning the key to the city at the event.
The TFAE also awarded this year’s James J. Buquet Jr. award to local interventional cardiologist Craig Walker.
Walker, a native of Bourg, opened the Houma Heart Clinic in 1983. It grew into the Cardiovascular Institute of the South, which has since grown to 14 locations throughout Louisiana and Alabama, employing 30 physicians and over 450 staff members.
Walker pioneered many limb-saving techniques and medical devices for diabetic patients with circulatory problems.
