The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office said several complaints have been made regarding locals getting calls from numbers listed as from Sierra Leone. Some of the calls have come in at all hours of the night and early morning.
Often, the phone rings just once or twice when a call is made.
LPSO says the calls are part of a scam known as “Wangiri” or “One Ring”, adding that the scammers want you to then call the number back and ring up huge international phone charges.
LSPO suggests locals to block the numbers and/or download one of several phone apps available that can potentially identify spam calls.
The story of the spam calls has gone global over the weekend with USA Today doing a story talking about how sophisticated scammers have gotten hi recent years.
