TIME TO BRAG
May 4, 2018At first glance, wellness in the workplace kind of seems impossible. After all, I know it can’t be healthy to sit in front on a computer screen for eight hours a day, five days a week. Yet for the overwhelming majority of Americans, this is life. But the workplace doesn’t have to be unhealthy. We just have to make choices that boost our wellness and the wellness of those around us. Even if your company doesn’t have a corporate wellness program, there are many things you can do each day or speak to your employer about implementing that will bring a bit of wellness to your life.
• Healthy snacking – If your office has a vending machine, talk to the vendor about replacing a few of the options with healthier options. Consider stocking coffee or break rooms with fresh fruit.
• Drink more water – Water is essential to a healthy body and mind Instead of grabbing a soda from the vending machine, bring a refillable bottle for water. Ask if your company would consider renting a water cooler.
• Bring your lunch – You are less likely to skip lunch or make an unhealthy food choice if you have already packed a delicious lunch. Find a nice quiet place to enjoy your lunch.
• Get moving – If your office has stairs, use them! If you need to meet with a coworker, walk to their desk instead of calling Find a reason to move from your chair at least once an hour to help ease back and neck tension and stretch your muscles.
• Go green – Green, as in thumb! Other than just being pretty, plants produce oxygen that can help in a closed up area or cubicle.
• Exercise together-Whether it’s all going to the gym at 5 or talking a walk around the block at noon, J exercising is a great way to visit with your coworkers while staying fit.
• Ergonomic work area – Consider getting a chair that supports your back and bottom properly. Another option is to use a counter height desk that can allow you to stand and work for periods of time as well as sit.
• Avoid eyestrain – Eyestrain can lead to headaches and increased sensitivity to light It’s important for your computer monitor to be at least an arm’s length away If you can’t read the screen at that distance, just increase the font size.
• De-clutter your workspace – Organization is key to keeping stress levels at bay Keeping your desktop clean helps to keep you on task.
• Take breaks – It’s important to take breaks and allow your mind to reset Step away from your desk and regroup. Go outside if you can and take a brisk walk around. Or sit and quietly meditate.
• Bring your pet to work – Pets have been shown to reduce stress significantly. Imagine how much calmer your day would be if your cat or dog were with you at work. Place an aquarium in your office; the sound of water can be beneficial as well.
• Champion wellness in your office – Every office needs someone who actively participates in and makes healthy chokes. Be that person in your office. Take the steps necessary to make sure you are healthy and happy.
