Woman ends tarpon drought in Lafourche

The 2016 Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo was ruled by the women.

For starters, Larose-based insurance agent Ashley Barrios was the rodeo’s admiral — the first female to garner the honor in the 68-year history of the prestigious event.

And at the weight station, Grand Isle native Monique South stole the show, scoring a championship-winning 88-pound, 10-ounce tarpon to win the rodeo title.

South’s fish ended a four-year drought where there were no tarpons at the rodeo. She said the key to the fish was being patient.
