BP has to make settlement payments by Aug. 26

U.S. District Court Judge Carl J. Barbier ordered British Petroleum to pay settlements accepted by a majority of the 511 local taxing bodies from Texas to Florida that made claims following the Deepwater Horizon by Aug. 26.

BP was the operator of an oil rig nearly 50 miles off the Louisiana coast that exploded on April 20, 2010, killing 11 workers and injuring 17 others, then spewed oil into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days. The judicial order, signed by Barbier on Monday, June 27, gives the company 30 days to settle with the agencies.

In the settlement, Terrebonne Parish will receive $9.5 million toward economic development. Lafourche Parish will receive $8.1 million. The amount for environmental recovery that has yet to be determined.

Louisiana is slated to receive $6.8 billion of a total $18,732 billion settlement awarded to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Disabled vets get parking help

The Terrebonne Parish Council voted to allow disabled veterans who have a license plate indicting such from the Office of Motor Vehicles to be excluded from requirements to place a disability placard on their rearview mirror or place their disabled ID card on their dashboard.

The new law allows disabled vets to use only their license plate to prove their disability to inquiring police officers.
